Fifteen Africans, including six Nigerians, are among 199 honourees who have been selected for the 2013 Young Global Leaders Award of the World Economic Forum instituted by the Dangote Fellowship.
According to a statement by the organisation, of the 15 honourees, eight have been adjudged eligible for the Young Global Leaders Dangote Fellowship, a fellowship that gives them the opportunity of being sponsored fully to regional and global events being organised by the World Economic Forum.
Dangote Fellowship, instituted by the Dangote Foundation, has sponsored members of the community of the YGLs to various private programmes at the Annual General Meeting of the New Champions in China, World Economic Forum in India, several meetings in Davos and the WEF Educational Module in the United State of America.
Since its inception the Dangote Fellowship programme has funded 35 trips of 14 African Young Global Leaders with the opportunity to increase their participation at regional and global events organised by the World Economic Forum.
The Young Global Leader award is an honour bestowed by the World Economic Forum each year to recognise the most distinguished leaders under the age of 40, nominated from around the world.
The statement said, “The Class of 2013 represents the best of today’s leaders under the age of 40. They will be joining a truly global community of more than 1,000 active YGL members and alumni – a community of diverse perspectives but united in its shared purpose of creating a better world.
“The YGL community enables leaders to turn their personal success into global significance through the scaling up of ideas that lead to impactful change.”
To achieve its mission, the FYGL acts as a platform for young leaders to be both a voice for the future in global thought processes and a catalyst for joint action when appropriate.
