The Lagos State Government has honoured some outstanding teachers in its employ with cars and other gift items.
The state Ministry of Education honoured them during the 2014 Education Merit Award held at Ikeja on Monday.
Also honoured were exceptional schools, pupils and members of staff of the ministry.
Commending the teachers, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, said the initiative was one of the reform measures of the state to improve productivity and service delivery in the education sector.
According to her, nine of the 57 awardees will later this year compete with their counterparts from other states for the President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence awards in Abuja.
Oladunjoye said, “Let me urge all our awardees to keep up the good work of contributing positively to the development of education in the state. The government on its part will continue to provide the enabling environment for the attainment of its lofty goals.
“I also wish to encourage others not honoured this year to continue to discharge their duties diligently so that they too can be honoured in subsequent editions.”
The chairman of the occasion, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe, hailed the state government for initiating the programme.
He said, “Leadership plays a major role in achieving the overall success of every organisation. I join the state government to appreciate our teachers and their roles in the outstanding performance of our pupils not only in national examinations but also in various competitions. It is evident that the state government is on the move towards professional human resources management.”
