A major drawback of smartphones, technology is the inability to find solution to battery life.  Unlike feature phones which have standby time that lasts days, most smartphones cannot make it through a full day on a single charge. The inconvenience of having to carry around a charger or battery pack to keep up with a smartphone’s demands is something many users do not like, but are constrained to do.
In making batteries, several different combinations of chemicals are commonly used, including: lead–acid, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium polymer (Li-po).
Although much research has gone into finding a more efficient and enduring capacity for batteries, the current solution that still makes economic sense for the manufacturers has been to increase the capacity or strength of the battery which is measured in Milliamps Hour (mAh). mAh is important because it’s the easiest way to distinguish the strength or capacity of a battery. The higher the mAh, the longer the battery will last. Think of a car’s petrol tank.  Voltage is how much petrol is being used, and mAh is the size of the tank.  The bigger the petrol tank (mAh) rating the longer the device will run.
For now, increasing mAh ratings is the line smartphone manufacturers have toed. The following is Digital Savvy’s compilation of the smartphone’s currently available in the market with the largest battery capacities.
Blackberry Passport
This is the current flagship smartphone of Nigeria’s once most popular smartphone maker, released in September this year. The company looks good to make a comeback with the release of the Passport which is gradually gaining  popularity on the local scene, and endearing the hearts of lost converts back to the platform and strengthening the love of BlackBerry fans. In the heydays of Blackberry in Nigeria, BB batteries were a major cause for concern as they were not long lasting. However, BlackBerry seems to have taken this into consideration when they fitted the Passport with a non-removable Li-Ion 3,450 mAh battery. How long will this battery last? 24 hours of 3G talk time and 14.5 days on standby, BlackBerry says.
Lumia 1520
After being taken over by Microsoft, Nokia’s erstwhile smartphone offerings will now carry the Lumia brand name only. Lumia 1520 is a large screen device running Windows phone operating system. Microsoft is pushing for a larger market share against Android, Apple iOS and BlackBerry with this device that is driven by a non-removable Li-Ion 3400 mAh battery. Microsoft says this device has maximum standby time of 32 days, maximum talk time (2G): 27.4 hours on 2G network and 25.1 hours on 3G.
The above phablets because of their size, which is over 5-inches, will naturally accommodate bigger batteries and therefore larger capacities, some smartphones with smaller screens sizes have fared well in battery tests. Tests have revealed that among the top performers in battery endurance tests are the HTC One (M8) and the Sony Xperia Z3.
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
This is an upgrade over last year’s Note 3. Galaxy Note 4 is a phablet like the BlackBerry Passport and Ascend Mate 7. The battery that comes with the Galaxy Note 4 has a capacity of 3220 mAh. The Note 4 tests at about 28.5 hours of talk time or almost 11 hours of Web browsing.
Unlike the previous smartphones on this list, Note 4 has a removeable battery, which means it can be salvaged by removing the battery if ever it drops in water.
Huawei Ascend Mate 7
Huawei is a Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company. It is the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world, having overtaken Ericsson in 2012. Recently, the company ventured in to the manufacture of Android phones.
Released in October, Ascend Mate 7 is a 6-inch Android smartphone powered by a non-removable Li-Po 4100 mAh battery. Put to the test, this top-range Chinese phone will, on stand-by, last up to 27 days on a 3G network. The company claims it will last up to more than 2 days of talk time.
