Unbelievable but a bowl of porridge each day can seriously improve your health and even extend your lifespan — Harvard University scientists found.
Could you imagine that such a simple dish as a whole-grain porridge can reduce the risk of dying from cancer and heart disease. It’s generally known that whole grains are highly beneficial for health but this is the first research dedicated to a link between whole grains and life expectancy.
The study involved more than 100,000 people, both porridge-eaters and porridge-haters, for 14 years, monitoring their diets and their health. And the results were stunning – those who ate the most whole grains, (such as porridge, brown rice, corn and quinoa) seemed protected from many illnesses and particularly heart disease.
Remember that 30 grams of whole grains eaten per day reduces the the risk of all death was reduced by 5% and heart deaths by 9 %. What is even more interesting is that the boost remains even when adjusted for other lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking and being overweight.
Whole grains can boost bone mineral density, lower blood pressure, cholesterol, promote healthy gut bacteria and reduce the risk of diabetes, fat forming in the arteries, preventing heart attacks and strokes. They contain high levels of nutrients like zinc, copper, manganese, iron and thiamine.
