The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has said the government will soon be providing 10,000 homes in the state.
The governor said the state was collaborating with a firm, First World Communities, to complement the government’s effort in community development under the Co-operative Home Ownership Incentive Scheme.
He added that the ability to own a home in the scheme would be tied to the “occupant income and prosperity”.
Fashola, according to a statement on Monday, spoke during the inauguration of the CHOIS City residential estate in Agbowa in the Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area of the state.
The event witnessed the inauguration of the first phase of the scheme which comprised 280 two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows and 180 semi-detached three-bedroom apartments.
Fashola said, “The truth is that there are many people in our society who need home and can get loan from their place of work, but there are no houses to buy. Some people also need the support of government to become landlords.
“This is what the Lagos State Mortgage Homes and CHOIS City’s collaboration is meant to address. This is our first establishment of lease-to-own that involves gradual payment in which one will become the owner of the apartment after a 15-year window.”
The governor said such benefit was what democracy could bring when government is accountable to the people.
“Ensure that you collect your voter cards and vote wisely to ensure continuity of this progressive work,” he added.
The President of First World Communities, Brig.-Gen. Tunde Reis, (retd), said the first phase of the project would be built across the three senatorial districts of Lagos State to deliver housing units to low and medium income households.
“The pilot project, CHOIS Garden, was developed at Abijo Government Reservation Area, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. It will have over 2,000 homes with over 500 already built and allocated.
“Agbowa target is 4,000 homes; Epe-Ibeju is 1,000, while Badagry area is to cover 3,000 homes. All in such a way that ability to afford it is tied to once income and continued prosperity.”
