M
anagement consultants and experts in human resource training say many workers often complain of stress at work. They note that only a fraction of employees find satisfaction at work. Some workers, in a bid to find satisfaction, end up taking alcohol in order to reduce work stress. But experts note that that there are many simple adjustments that can boost your spirits, and perhaps even your productivity on the job.
The Chief Consultant, Supreme Management Consultants, Mr. Yinka Fasuyi, in a recent interview with this correspondent, noted that to work effectively and stay healthy, employees must try to adopt easy work tactics that will make them happy. Experts say too much stress at work can lead to ill health if not checked. Below are some better ways to become happier at work, according to professionals:
Eat at regular intervals
The work schedule of many employees may make them forget or jettison food until they are through with work. When this is repeated often, it may lead to constipation or an anomaly in the employee’s body. Experts note that it is easy in the hectic work world to get swept up in a task and completely forget to feed. It is advisable for a worker to eat at regular intervals even if he cannot squeeze out a 30 to 60 minute lunch break daily.
This can be achieved by keeping simple snacks, fruits and vegetables on hand. Items like peanuts, chocolate chips and doughnuts can be kept on your desk for hungry moments. You may store some beverages in your freezer and just don’t let your stomach get empty, because low blood sugar, experts say, sends most people into an irritable, ineffective and inefficient state.
It is also advisable that you diversify your beverages. If possible, keep an energy drink handy and sip from it regularly. Dehydration will make you feel lousy and you will not get much done on the work front, experts note.
Decorate your work area
Though you may not have enough space or room, but as an employee, you need to make your surrounding friendly as this will make you more relaxed while working. According to experts, whether you have a tiny workstation or a full home office, it is your duty to make that environment inviting. You can achieve this by putting a photo or two of friends or family where you can see them. Place a few fresh flowers on your desk in order to enjoy your work schedule. When this is done, you will enjoy the hours when you are working more than before.
Take a walk
No matter how busy you are, you need to stretch your legs now and again. This is because it is not healthy to be sitting all day long. The employee must take a walk up and down the stairs a few times so as to get the blood moving. Instead of the regular coffee break, try and walk around your neighbourhood to recharge your body system. This will make you gain energy and burn some calories as you exercise.
Smile and play briefly
When the leader of a team is in a bad mood, everyone in the team might feel the same. So, once in a while it is important you smile around and discuss with colleagues. You may also play briefly to relax your mind. The Managing Consultant, Simply Exponential Consult Limited, Mrs. ‘Fayo Williams, notes that being productive does not mean you should be isolated from others.
Experts note that employees need to talk to people in order to feel connected. When you get a chance, call a friend or send your hubby a romantic email or text. If you have a coworker you like, ask him or her to come on a walk or lunch break now and then during work periods, as this will make you more relaxed.
Think positively
Some people consider this as simple, but many individuals never do it. Instead of looking on the worst side of work, try to see the bright side and carry it out. It is important you ask yourself what benefit the situation will provide you. Know that you are learning new things by working hard and it will be a source of encouragement to you.
Celebrate success
Employees should celebrate the success of one another with snacks or any other food. Most people think eating together is fun. And the appeal of free food excites many. So try and celebrate success in grand style and it will make you happy while working.
Respond calmly to urgent requests
When you are asked for help to meet some other urgent need, be calm to respond when you are under pressure. Ask questions like ‘when do you need this done?’ or ‘what is the stipulated deadline for this job?’ experts note that most people when asked one of these questions, realise it is not as urgent and will set a future date. When this is established, you can handle other pressing issues and stay happy.
Reward yourself
Do not fail to give yourself a good treat at the end of a long day or week. Ensure you do something nice for yourself after putting so much energy at work. You may have a night at the movies, a soak in the tub and a glass of good wine. You may also try a manicure; the important thing is that you enjoy the treat. This is because you’ve earned it after all.
