The 12 best smartphones for Christmas

Smartphones will be top of many peoples Christmas lists this year so we’ve gathered the 12 best smartphones to give as a gift this year. Smartphones come in all manner of sizes, shapes and colours – not to mention prices and operating systems. We’ve rounded up 12 smartphones from the four major operating systems – iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry. There’s something for everyone with prices starting at £70, cameras reaching 41Mp and screens reaching the same Full HD resolution as your TV.
Google Nexus 5
The Nexus 5 is the best buy this Christmas. Google’s latest smartphone has a smart understated design, double the storage compared to the previous model and a Full HD screen. For £299 it’s a bargain and you get Android 4.4 KitKat.
Apple iPhone 5S
The iPhone is still a formidable force in the smartphone world and the 5S comes with some nice new features. Inside is a 64-bit processor, the first in a smartphone, and the undeniably cool Touch ID fingerprint scanner is integrated into the home button. It also comes in gold, if you like that kind of thing.
Motorola Moto G
Motorola’s latest smartphone offers mid-range specifications at a truly budget price of just £135. There’s limited storage but the phone has a great screen, decent cameras and will get Android 4.4 KitKat shortly after Christmas. There are also coloured interchangeable shells.
LG G2
The G2 is the best Android package on the market at the moment offering very high quality build, design, performance and hardware. What’s more is the fact you get this at a price much lower than similar devices. It’s only missing a microSD card slot.
Sony Xperia Z1
If you’re buying a smartphone for someone who enjoys outdoor pursuits then the Xperia Z1 is going to be a great choice. The device has flagship specifications combined with robust build quality. Importantly, it’s one of the only handsets on the market with dust and waterproof credentials.
iPhone 5C
If you can’t afford the iPhone 5S then the 5C is Apple’s more affordable option, although it’s not that much cheaper. Almost anyone is going to enjoy getting given an iPhone for Christmas and the colourful shells of the 5C make it that bit more personal too.
HTC One
The HTC One is up there with the very best smartphones on the market today. It has superb performance and excellent build quality in its aluminium shell – which now comes in a range of colours. It’s also got one of the best screens available and HTC’s classy Sense interface.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
If someone’s tied between a smartphone and a tablet, why not try and satisfy both desires with a ‘phablet’. The Galaxy Note 3 has a huge 6in screen so it fits in a pocket but has plenty of real estate. It also comes with an S Pen stylus for taking notes and drawing.
Huawei Ascend P6
The Ascend P6 is one of the most stylish Android smartphones around so will appeal to those who like to make a fashion statement with their phone. It’s also got decent specs and a reasonable price, as long as you can deal with the design similarities with the iPhone.
Nokia Lumia 1020
Keen photographers will go mad for the Lumia 1020 with its 41Mp PureView camera. It’s the best smartphone shooter around and you don’t have to buy it in luminous yellow. The downsides are that other hardware is dated and the handset runs Windows Phone.
BlackBerry Z30
BlackBerry may be rocky ground and a company but the Z30 is an impressive smartphone. It looks nice and offers good build quality. BlackBerry 10 OS is smooth once you get used to the gestures although there is a lack of good apps. The Z30 is a phone for the constant emailer.
ZTE Blade V
If you’re on a tight budget this Christmas then ZTE is on hand with its £70 Blade V. It’s one of the cheapest smartphones on the market and isn’t rubbish. It looks nice and has good specifications for the asking price.
