London, April 10 (CNA) A total of 17 universities from Taiwan have been listed among the top 100 in the inaugural Asia Univeristy Rankings released Wednesday by Times Higher Education magazine, with National Taiwan University ranked highest at 14th.

Also on the list are National Tsing Hua University (27th), National Chiao Tung University (32nd), National Sun Yat-sen University (46th), National Cheng Kung University (47th), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (52nd), National Central University (54th), National Taiwan Normal University (68th), China Medical University Taiwan (69th) and Yuan Ze University (71st).

Others are Chung Yuan Christian University (72nd), National Taiwan Ocean University (76th), National Chung Cheng University (83rd), National Yang-Ming University (89th), National Chung Hsing University (92nd), Feng Chia University (98th) and National Taipei University of Technology (100th).

Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education Rankings, described Taiwan's performance in the Asia rankings as surprising, given the fact that only seven universities from Taiwan were included in the world's top 400 list last year.

The results demonstrate the depth and strength of Taiwan universities, he said.

The performance of the universities was measured using 13 indicators in five main categories -- teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income, which refers to a university's ability to reinforce industry with innovation.

The top five institutions in Asia are University of Tokyo, National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, Peking University and Pohang University of Science and Technology, in that order.
