The former head of the human rights investigation commission, popularly known as Oputa Panel, was rushed to the hospital on February 14 after he suffered a partial stroke.
He was rushed from the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, to a specialist hospital in Enugu the next day.
He was reportedly moved to Abuja, where he had been living with his son before he travelled to their home-town where he took ill.
He eventually died in Abuja on Sunday.
The statement issued by Charly Boy on behalf of the family read: “The family of Justice Chukwudifu Oputa wishes to announce the passing to glory of the eminent jurist and retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria at the age of 96.
“He passed on peacefully on Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2014, after recovering from a brief illness. Funeral announcements will soon be released by the family.”
Reacting to the demise, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bayo Ojo, described him as “an iconoclast of humanity, the Socrates of our time and one of the finest brew of jurisprudence and a commitment to justice.
“His death is, indeed, the drawing of the curtain on an era in the justice sector that generations after would forever long for. He belonged to the ages, his memories are naturally bound to be immortal. We shall all surely miss him.”
