Physicians warn higher BP increases stroke risk

BY | March 13, 2014

Physicians warn that higher BP increases stroke risk.  Keeping blood pressure under check has been the biggest challenge for doctors and patients. Doctors have always advised patients to take BP seriously as it can also trigger other diseases like stroke.
Now a study has pointed out that even slightly higher BP can raise stroke risk. Dr. Ralph Sacco, chairman of neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, who was not involved in the research, said: “This meta-analysis confirms evidence from many studies, and I think it continues to warn physicians and the public that more vigorous control of blood pressure is important for reducing stroke risk. The findings confirm that even mild to moderate levels of elevated blood pressure are important for determining stroke risk.”

It is understood that doctors have come to this conclusion after analyzing data from 760,000 study participants. Interestingly they were followed for up to 36 years. During researches it has been found that people suffering “prehypertension” have also chance of suffering from stroke. Usually this tendency of higher-than-optimal blood pressure has not been officially defined as high blood pressure. People have been suggested carefully take up BP as it leads to stroke. In the US it is a big killer claiming 130,000 deaths annually.
