EU and Nigeria Sign N2.1BN Deal To Establish Peace



EU and the Federal Government of Nigeria signed an agreement on a programme on promoting women's engamenent in peace and security in the Northern Nigeria.
The agreement was signed yesterday by the Supervising Minister of the National Planning Commission, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, representing the Federal Government of Nigeria, and Michael Arrion, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, signed it on behalf of the EU.
The EU, European Union is to fund 10m Euros, N2.1bn for the project, and it will be implemented by the UN Women together with UNICEF.
According to the EU, this program is in line with 2011 Annual Action Plan, which was approved by the European Commission, and covers a number of projects in Nigeria's priority sectors jointly agreed in the context of Country Strategy Paper, signed by Nigeria and the EU, November 2009.
The EU Ambassador stated that:  ‘The Programme aligns with the EU’s Country Strategy paper for Nigeria and Comprehensive Approach to the EU Implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1885, the new local regular dialogue on peace, security and stability as agreed in the Third Nigeria-EU Ministerial meeting (8th February 2012) and the EU Action Plan on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in development (2010-2015). The Programme will also contribute to meeting the national aspirations as encapsulated in the Nigeria’s vision 20:2020″.
This project is also aimed at creating means of enhancing and encouraging women's participation in building peace in Nigeria. Project follows multi-level implementation model of the UNSCR, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, contributes to the resolution via 3 objectives: Support women’s participation in conflict prevention and peace building; develop tools and mechanisms to mitigate conflict’s impact on women and girls; and establish a conducive environment for strengthening the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325.
