Healthy lifestyle good for kidneys

NEGROS OCC., June 25 (PIA6)--A government physician advised Negrenses to take care of their kidneys by taking on a healthy lifestyle.

Provincial Health Officer Medical Officer II Ma. Teresa V. Bacabac said this includes consuming food and drinks in moderation that are neither too salty nor sweet coupled with regular exercise.

One should also check his blood pressure twice a year, avoid smoking and alcoholic drink, take only medicines prescribed by the doctor, have an annual urinalysis, consult a doctor before taking an herbal supplement and drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.

In a PIA radio program aired over Radyo Kumando 103.1 FM, she said kidney diseases now rank 9th among top causes of death among Filipinos necessitating huge financial requirement for treatment.

An End Stage Renal Disease patient is required to undergo three dialysis per week that costs around P2, 500 to P5, 000 per session.

A kidney transplant could reach at least a million, not to mention the emotional burden that members of the family suffer.

She said the PHO campaigns on the prevention of kidney diseases through information and education.

Quoting the findings of the National Kidney Transplant Institute, she said among the warning signs of kidney disorder are- puffiness around the eyes, swelling in the feet and legs and water in the lungs leading to difficulty of breathing, pain or unusual sensation during voiding, increased or decreased frequency of urination, difficulty in initiating urination, frequent urination at night, change in color of urine, blood in the urine or bubbly appearance of the urine.

Kidneys are affected by other diseases like diabetis mellitus, high blood pressure, kidney stones and glomerulonephritis -the inflammation of the glomeruli. If not treated, patients may suffer slow progressive damage to the kidneys and develop renal failure.

Meanwhile, a group of physicians from the National Kidney Transplant Institute- Renal Control Program are set to conduct an activity in Bacolod City on kidney diseases prevention and care on June 26 and 27.

June is celebrated as the national kidney month with the theme “Malusog na Bato,Yan ang Gusto Ko.” (PIA6-LOL/JCM)
