Nigerians have been assured by the Federal Government that there will be uninterrupted power supply in the country by December, 2012. The federal government says that it plans to generate 5,400 megawatts from the current 4,400 megawatts.
According to Doyin Okupe , Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs in Abuja on Monday,  the 5,400 megawatts target will be actualized  following the arrangement by the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) to add 1,000MW to the current 4,400.
“The reason for this additional increase is coming from the NIPP that are now adding between 600 and 800 megawatts to the national grid. That’s what is responsible for this new improvement and between now and December, we are expecting nearly an additional 1,000 megawatts, because of increase and an arrangement that have been made for purchase and supply of gas to some of these NIPP projects. More areas will enjoy longer hours of electricity supply by December.”  Okupe said.
The 5000 megawatts target for December 2012 would be achieved if the power plants slated to come on stream get sufficient gas to operate. The plants are those at Omotosho , Alaoji and Egbema, according to the Ministry of Power.
President Jonathan took over the direct supervision of the ministry to avoid failures in his promises to deliver stable power supply to the nation.
