Chika Uwazie’s Talent Base: Why Keeping Good Company Helps Your Business

It was Albert Einstein who said, “it’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer”. Considering his achievements, one would actually rank him as one of the smartest people the world has ever seen, a feat only possible due to his problem solving skills. For business people today, one problem confronts every trade and every idea – people. Selling an idea is simple, it is executing it that’s hard and you can’t execute an idea with more ideas. What you need is people; the right people.
We won’t try to give a definition for whom the ‘right person’ is but hopefully, you discover who they are after you have learnt what they bring to the table.
Higher Success Rate
There’s an African proverb that says to go fast, go alone, to go far, go together. This holds true for businesses. Having the right people on your business team means fresh ideas, different approaches and ultimately, larger outcomes. It’s suicidal for business owners to only rest on their own understanding without considering those of others. This leads to slow progress as well as poor evaluation of plans. Getting feedback from more people means you can make more informed decisions and have enough good hands to delegate tasks to. All these amount to better outcomes.
Learning Opportunities
Being with someone who inspires you to become a better version of yourself is often underrated; sadly so. Unconsciously, being surrounded by the right persons makes you pick better skills. Psychologists have tried to narrow it down and say we are the average of the five persons we spend the most time with. What this means is, you have a higher chance of learning skills from people, even if passively, just by sticking around them, engaging them. How cool is that?
Network Expansion
Every now and then, businesses need to reach out to people for fundraising purposes, collaborative efforts and other business needs. Having the right team makes this is easier as each member can simply pool their contacts to help solve challenges. This isn’t limited to just teammates but friends too. Word of mouth is still very efficient today and to get the most from such form of marketing you need to surround yourself with people who understand what you do and can talk to others about.
Motivation
When it gets tough, we all need people beside us to remind us that it can only get better. This sort of support can only come from people who understand one’s journey and most times are in the position to offer good and helpful piece of advice. Sometimes, there is no need for words; all the inspiration you might need happens from just looking at how smart or thorough someone in your circle is. We all need motivation.
Ride or Die Moments
Yes, this is a thing in today’s startup world. Take a pick of different industries and travel back to the foundation of some of the best brands in those industries. One will often notice how a good number of co-founders have known themselves from college, a group in school or some other society where good ideas were mostly shared. Want to know why this counts? As you grow your business, you need people who understand your vision to grow. Your circle often ends up being those people; and over the years, you must have built a strong element for business with them – trust!
Selecting people to work with is daunting, but building a team is a lot easier for people who are in the midst of doers. As a business owner, more than just thinking up ideas, you must find the right people to unleash the power of such ideas. More than just people who can execute ideas, you must discover people who compliment what each person does.
Here is some free advice: surround yourself with the visionaries, the doers, the happy people and the foolish ones – the ever curious. You can also just be one and find the rest.
