Be kind to your heart

man
The holy book says, “Guard your heart jealously, because out of it comes the good things of life.”
Medical experts agree with this golden advice. They say these words of wisdom apply literally and figuratively to how we should protect our heart from danger in our day-to-day activities.
They note that protecting your heart goes beyond avoiding heartbreak or running away from sin and Satan; and stress that a healthy lifestyle is the ultimate way to reduce one’s chances of developing heart-related diseases.
A cardiologist (heart specialist) with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Dr. Jane Ajuluchukwu, says what an individual does daily would determine whether he/she would develop health complications like diabetes, stroke or kidney failure in future.
She notes that protecting your heart involves reducing your risks for cardiovascular diseases that could kill you before your time.
Doctors on WebMD.com say if you want to enjoy your pension allowances or be present at the ceremony to mark your 50th birthday and not die suddenly of a heart attack, cardiac arrest or cardiovascular diseases, some habits must go. They include the following:
Smoking
A cardiologist and medical director of the New York University Women’s Heart Programme, Nieca Goldberg, says a major cause of heart disease is smoking.
Goldberg says smoking raises blood pressure, causes blood clots, and makes it harder to exercise.
Again, the American Heart Association warns that smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the world.
Experts warn that even though it may be one of the most difficult habits to quit, the rewards of stopping smoking are perhaps the greatest and most immediate.
“When you toss the smokes, your heart disease risk goes down within just a few days of quitting. Within a year, your risk is cut by half. After 10 years of living smoke-free, it’s as if you never smoked at all,” the scientists assure.
Ignoring that chest pain
Goldberg, who, in her book entitled, Complete Guide to Women’s Health, warns that when your heart literally aches and you don’t know why, it’s time to get it checked out.
“If you have chest pains while working, walking, or exercising, that’s a red flag. But if it happens after a heavy meal, it’s more likely to be your stomach causing trouble.
“If you feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest and you start sweating, it is an urgent matter; go to a doctor or, better still, rush to the hospital. It is a sign of heart attack.
“Heart pain can feel more like a pressure rather than actual pain. People tend to feel it in the front of their chest, with the sensation sometimes extending into the shoulders, up into the jaw, or down the left arm,” Goldberg warns.
Eating with abandon
Ajuluchukwu notes that being obese or being overweight contributes to heart disease, heart failure, and a shorter lifespan. She says careless eating, especially in the 21st century where junk foods are readily available, may be injurious to your heart.
She adds, “Aim for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts; low in saturated fat and cholesterol; and with almost no trans fats. This does not mean you need to avoid fat altogether. Fats found in fish, olives and olive oil, nuts and avocados are heart-healthy and should be eaten in moderation.”
Avoiding the hospital
If the sight of injections or drugs is what is keeping you from the hospital, you may want to have a rethink.
Goldberg says when you don’t get checked out regularly by a doctor, you might not realise if you have some of the silent heart risk factors that are hard to detect.
“Some of the most common, symptom-free cardiovascular issues are also some of the most easily treated, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
“If the cost of a yearly medical check-up is holding you back, look for where they are doing free screening or tests in your community or local government. In fact, you can save a portion of your earnings for it,” She counsels.
Being a couch potato
Goldberg in her book notes that lack of physical exercise increases an individual’s risk for heart diseases.
Goldberg says, “Physical activity simply translates into living longer. Exercise helps lower blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, encourages weight loss, benefits blood vessel function, and cuts stress, among other things.
“Even if you haven’t been active for the last 20 years, it’s never too late to make an impact with exercise. Just be sure to talk to a doctor before you start a new fitness regimen. Tell your doctor exactly what you plan to do, or ask his or her advice, if you’re looking for suggestions.”
Neglecting your expanding waistline
If your belt size is slowly getting bigger, that’s something to worry about, physicians warn.
They say that excess fat tissue in the midsection (giving you an apple-shape figure) could mean you are already developing metabolic syndrome — a group of health problems that can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, through the hardening of the arteries, insulin resistance, and inflammation.
“A hefty waistline is linked to doubling your risk of heart disease,” Goldberg says. That’s good reason to redouble your efforts to get in shape through a healthy lifestyle. It’s not just about your clothes size.
Letting your blood pressure run amok
“A good way to wreck your heart is to leave your blood pressure elevated and untreated,” Goldberg notes.
She says allowing blood pressure to get out of hand makes the heart work harder and to enlarge, leading to heart failure; while it can also cause hardened arteries, thus raising your risks for heart attack, stroke, and other problems.
Physicians say even though symptoms of high blood pressure are rare, it’s relatively easy to diagnose. You can even check it yourself with a home blood pressure monitor. Diet, exercise, and medications (if needed) can also be used to treat high blood pressure. So, make the decision to live right.

Six reasons to be frugal

I talk a lot about saving money. I save it with the choices I make every day. Sometimes I conserve just a few pennies but on other occasions, I save considerably more than that.
But why bother? Since you can’t take it with you, why bother to be frugal? Here are six reasons:
1.    To be in control of your finances
Few things are more frightening than having too much month at the end of your money. Disconnection notices, past due bills, phone calls at all hours of the day and night – these can change a person and scar them forever.
I know people who make several times the income I do but constantly field eviction notices, have their vehicles repossessed and their utilities disconnected for non-payment.
They make too much money to qualify for assistance so they complain that the world is out to get them. The application of frugality can help people in this situation to regain control of their financial lives and make them feel better about themselves as a result.
2.    To achieve a goal
I had to do public jobs during the formative years of my oldest two children. After that experience, I was determined to stay at home and raise my youngest daughter. Frugality makes this goal much easier to accomplish.
You may want to have a parent stay home with the kids, take care of an old or ill family member, start a business, retire or whatever – frugality can help you to achieve all of that.
3.  To reduce the amount you have to work
Why give your best to the taskmasters? If you can live on less, you don’t have to work as long or as hard. You can actually take back your life and spend more of it doing what you want to do, instead of slaving away at a job you hate.
4.    To reduce your tax burden
The more money you earn, the greater percentage you are forced to pay in taxes. The self-employed are especially hit hard with this.
However, if you don’t need as much you don’t have to earn as much, effectively reducing your tax burden (and the pain of Tax Day) as well.
5.    To save for something
You may want to save for a home, a vehicle, a special vacation or even retirement. Every penny you can trim from your living expenses can be added to your savings.
6.    For fun
After a while it becomes a game to see “how low you can go” on your expenses. It is a challenge to explore new money saving options and to watch the pennies you save add up.
While at first I resented being forced to live on less, I now consider it a mental puzzle – an enjoyable hobby, I guess you could say.

Signs you are pursuing a wrong career

Experts are of the view that people who devote their time and energy to a job they are not cut out for are likely to end up frustrated and unproductive. SIMON EJEMBI writes on the warning signs
There are many people battling to climb the wrong career ladder in the society today, according to experts.
Some blame it on the high rate of unemployment in the country, some say it is as a result of poor career advice or lack of it. One thing they agree on is that it is very tough if not impossible for an individual to succeed in a profession that is not meant for them. The reason is simple; square pegs won’t fit in round holes.
Experts say it takes years for some people to realise that they made a mistake in choosing a career. When that happens, some of them take steps to correct the mistake; others end up stuck, forced to settle for limited success.
There are numerous warning signs an individual can look out for in order to determine if they have erred when they decided what profession or job they would spend their time doing.
The Senior Partner, Smart Work Network Incorporated, a firm which provides companies with solutions for their talent management lifecycle, Mr. Douglas Garner, says he has seen many people who would have been millionaires if they had channelled their energies into pursuing the right career but are battling to survive on the wrong job.
Lack of pride in your career
Some of the signs that an individual is walking the wrong career path are:
When your friends ask you for career advice and the only thing you can honestly tell them is to stay clear from the one you are in; when commuting to your job, your mind is already busy planning your schedule for the moment you clock out; when you wake up on Monday wishing it were Friday, again; when you receive a ‘Needs Improvement’ on your performance review; when your employer decides to transfer you to another functional department to ‘see if things might improve;’ when you get on an elevator and somebody asks, ‘how’s it going?’ and you answer, ‘It’s going;’ when you find yourself fantasising about a ‘lost time injury;’ when you are more excited about the food in the cafeteria than any new client or business announcements; and when you have calculated and have a running tally of the number of days you have to ‘survive’ to be ‘fully vested’ in your company’s retirement system.
Lack of passion or commitment
Forbes Magazine contributor, Erika Anderson, writes in an article that by reviewing the surroundings, job satisfaction and the connection with the profession, an individual can deduce whether the career or job is the right one.
On surroundings, she says the realities of the job and the company matter. According to her, it matters whether the work space is comfortable and it makes it easier to do good work. She adds that it also matters if you have the tools and resources you need, and if you like the people around you and consider the processes and policies reasonably efficient.
When it comes to what you do, she explains that questions regarding whether your day-to-day job “consists of things you like to do (for the most part) and find engaging and challenging.” It also matters if “your job generally plays to your strengths – that is, is your success at work primarily dependent on doing stuff you’re good at doing?”
Connection
Here, Anderson writes, “Are you passionate about the company’s mission?  Are you proud to be associated with it? Do you feel reasonably content and grateful to be working for this company, this department, this boss? Do you feel acknowledged and supported to succeed? If somebody asked you whether you’re planning on building a career here, would you say yes?”
Experts at allwomenstalk.com say the following signs also indicate that you are in the wrong profession:
You drag yourself to work everyday
If you find yourself dragging yourself to work today, looking forward to your dentist’s appointment and hoping you are sick every morning, then you are not enjoying your work. It is a sign that this career is probably not giving you what you are looking for in life.
You aren’t good at your work
One of the reasons people enjoy their job is because they are good at it. Knowing that you excel at what you do makes you instantly happier about your job. Conversely, if you just can’t get your head around what is expected of you, you will be unhappy. It’s time to consider another career.
You hate talking about what you do
When you go for a party or a date, if the last thing you want to talk about is your job, then you aren’t happy about what you’re doing and probably need to consider a different line of work.
You constantly complain about your job
Constantly cribbing and bitching about your job means only one thing – you need to get another one. Then consider if it is the workplace, your colleagues or your boss that you can’t tolerate or if it is the work itself. If it’s the latter, look out for a new career.
You go in late and leave early
Lack of motivation manifested in going in late and leaving early is a sure sign that you don’t enjoy what you are doing and should probably consider a different line of work. Regularly shirking your work means you just don’t like your job.
You spend most of your time on the social media
At work, if all you seem to be doing is browsing on Facebook, then either you have very little work or you don’t care to complete your work. Both are definite warning signs that you are in the wrong career.
You don’t feel challenged
Some people get extremely de-motivated when they find themselves in a role that does not challenge them. They will drag themselves to work, bunk whenever possible and generally perform badly. If you are not challenged about your work, consider a different career.
You look for ways to keep busy
If you keep finding yourself looking for ways to keep yourself busy at work, it means you are not challenged and you don’t have enough things to do. Both are certain recipes for disaster so reconsider your career right away.
It is a big decision to change your career particularly if you have major responsibilities, however, if you find a job you love, you will not have to work a day in your life. So, if you are experiencing any of the signs above, bite the bullet and change your career.

5 Things You Should Remove from Your Resume

Hiring managers are busy people. Job seekers need to stand out to attract attention. One way a job seeker can stand out is by making sure their resume contains exactly what is necessary for the interview and nothing more. With that in mind, here are five things to remove from your resume to make it as streamlined as possible.

1: “References Available Upon Request”

You don’t need references on your resume. You should carry a second document specifically for references. After all, if you’re going to tell the manager your references are available, you should have them available. Why do you want to prune this line, then?

They already know. It’s assumed that you have references and that they are available when the hiring manager asks for them. You don’t need to waste half a page on your resume with references and their contact information, nor do you need to waste a valuable line telling the manager what they already know.

2: The Obvious

Think about the kind of job you’re applying for. Is it a job in a hospital? Will you be working with computers? If so, your manager already assumes you can type. If you can’t, why would you be applying for that kind of job? You don’t need to include basic information like the ability to type, the ability to use a calculator or proficiency with e-mail in your resume if the job requirements assume that you have these basic skills.

When you tailor your resume for the job you’re applying to, prune out any information that would be considered essential or assumed for the job. The exception is if they specifically ask for those skills, in which case it’s a good idea to let them know you have them.

3: Personal Information

If your resume includes your age, gender, race, ethnicity, number of children, marital status, religion or any other personal information, scrap it and start over. Absolutely none of this information is relevant for a job application. In fact, in many cases it is actually illegal for the interviewer to ask for this information because it could be used in a discriminatory way.

Avoid the issue of discrimination by never including these details. You have more space for relevant information if you cut it all out.

4: Objective Statements

In the old days, every resume began with an objective statement. This was back when you simply applied to a company and they looked at what you wanted and tried to find a place for you. Does that sound like the modern hiring process?

Today, when you apply for a job, you know what that job is. The hiring manager knows this too, and so they know what you’re looking for in a job. They want to know what makes you a good fit for the job, not what makes the job a good fit for you.

5: Excess Contact Information

Does your resume have two phone numbers, three e-mail addresses, an instant messenger handle, a Skype ID and two mailing addresses? If so, you have far too much information. All you need is your name, address, a single phone number and one e-mail address.

Excess contact information gives the hiring manager a moment of indecision. It’s also useless. If they send you an e-mail or give you a call and you don’t respond, the second option they try is going to be a second applicant, not a second phone number. You can’t afford to be passed over so easily.

With these five items gone, your resume is free to rise above the average. If you can impress your interviewer with the concise quality of your resume, you can get a good head start on the interview.
