Giving attention to your financial life

E-mail Print PDF
An out of control personal finance situation can destabilize your whole life. This write up provides some tips on how you can improve your financial situation.
Working from home is one avenue worth investigating when you want to save money. The truth is that working in an office can be expensive. Fuel and meal expenses are two of the main expenses that you will incur when driving to work and working in the office.
It is a good idea to apply your tax refund toward paying down your debts. Use your refunds to pay back your debt, in an effort to achieve a solid financial situation. Unfortunately, the money is spent quickly and the debt still remains.
One way to improve one’s personal finances is to cut back on expensive restaurant trips and, in fact, to avoid all sorts of ready-made meals. Someone can save money by buying the ingredients to make healthy meals and cooking them at home. It is a great way for someone to feel pride in their meals and save money at the same time.
Budgeting
Always look for things that you can cut from your current budget. A good instance of this would be dining out. If you eliminate this luxury altogether, you will likely not be able to stay committed for very long. You can keep enjoying your favorite restaurants and save money at the same time by reducing the number of dinners you go out for by half.
Utility Bills
Pay the utility bills for your home on time each and every month. A habit of paying bills late can have negative effects on your credit rating. Additionally, many utilities are going to slap on a late fee that just costs you more of your money. Late payments are not worth the additional fees and stress, so pay bill in a timely manner whenever possible.
Almost everyone at some point in time makes a mistake with their finances. You can request a waived fee for a one-time bounced check from your bank. This courtesy is usually only extended to customers who are consistent in avoiding overdrawing their checking account, and is usually offered on a one-time basis.
Understanding compound interest
Understanding what compounding interest is, will help younger people get a good handle on their finances. Make an account just for savings, and automatically put a certain percentage of your earnings into it.
Emergency fund
It may be better to set money aside in an emergency fund before paying off your debt, especially, if the debt was acquired from using credit cards in an emergency. To decide how much you should put in your emergency fund, make a list of common household and medical problems you might encounter and their estimated costs.
Asset valuation
Know the value of things you save or have around the house. People often have things of great value that they think are not worth anything, and they throw it out. It’s also important to check on the value items you might not have bought that you are considering getting rid of. Sometimes an ugly vase may be a collectible to someone else. A quick Internet search can give you some information about the value of certain items.
Finally, Working on improving your personal finances can enable you to get a better picture on where you stand financially. Having your finances right helps you alleviates stress and can let you see the bigger picture and work on other things that need attention.

Omotola-Jalade-Ekeinde1-399x600
The famous actress, Omotala Kehinde has decided to share her past to all her fans across the globe. “people has always ask me series of questions that as to do with my life, but i think now is the right time to talk”. She said.
Omotola, in an interview react to different question, bellow was her reaction all the questions.
Coming into Reality show?
“I am scared about the reality show but it is a risk I have to take, life is all about risks, thanks God am doing great” she says.
Your career as an actress?
“I did not always aspire to be an actress, I started out as a model. It was tough then, modelling like every other part of entertainment was not developed and one had to wait forever to get a job. Plus, there were too many girls who wanted the same job. It was just a hobby for me.
“I thought if I wanted to do something for a career, it would be music because I sang in the choir and one could see the direction music was heading at the time. But I went into acting when I accompanied my friend who was a model to the casting of a movie. She did not get the part but she told me to try, I did and I got my very first movie role.”
She says, “I was troublesome! Nothing too crazy though because my mum was extremely strict and I could not go all out to make trouble. But I would be the one to pinch or probably tear somebody’s dress somewhere. Then I had this sweet face so when they catch me I would deny, look very innocent and everybody would be petting me instead of punishing me.”
The saddest day in your life?
The saddest day of my life came when I lost MY father at a tender age.
She recalls, “It was the worst moment of my life till date. Even though I have lost my mum and my mum’s death too was very painful but I think, my dad’s death was more painful because I was very close to him. For a very long time I did not get along with my mum because of her disciplinary nature but I was very close to my dad because I was the only girl and the only child for a very long time. My dad was the manager of Lagos Country Club and I used to go to school at Chrisland Nursery School, Opebi. Then we moved from Ikoyi to Iyana-Ipaja and since my house was far from the school, I would naturally go to Lagos Country Club to stay with my dad after school. When he died, it was like life left me, my younger brothers are quite younger than me so when my dad left me I did not have anybody. I was alone emotionally; I closed up. I did not mourn and I did not grieve. I was in shock for a very long time, I did not know what to do or where to go but when I saw the trauma my mum was going through, I just figured out I had to be the man.
“My mum was a petty trader then, she had a store where she sold drinks and pepper soup, but after my dad died, she started doing other things and I had to step up and help because she was going through a lot. ”
What can you say about your husband?
“My story hasn’t been a sad one all through. When i meet my husband, Matthew Ekeinde, who was 26 then, is one of my happy memories.
“I was 16 and really big for my age, I actually looked 20, I have always been very mature anyway, maybe because of the death of my father, I had to grow up quickly. So when he met me he actually thought I was older and when he got to know I was 16 he said ‘ah ha, what would I do with 16?’ So we became just friends but when I turned 18, he said ‘oh you are an adult now, will you marry me?’ I was like oh, hell no!
“He was a pilot then; he had been flying since the age of 17. It was not what attracted me to him. Actually that was a turn off for me. Before I met him, I wanted to be a pilot too at some point. Besides, I knew the lifestyle some of them lived; pilots had a reputation for having wives in each of the cities their planes landed! I told him I was not ready to be a caricature, I asked him- am I going to be your Lagos wife now?
“But I got to know him and his soul; everybody fell in love with him, because that is one way to gauge a guy, from what everybody says about him. Everybody, including my mum loved him.”
“We have been together for 15 years and at a time when most celebrity marriages are crashing. I thank God that am still in happy home now.”
“We both have our foundation and that foundation is Christ. I am not too sexy to admit that. I will always be sexy. If it was just love it would have crashed a long time ago, there are times when you would not be in love. The fear of God as a higher power keeps everyone in check.
“When we fight, we don’t go for counseling because we don’t like discussing ourselves with other people. And we do fight, oh yes. Our fights are not even funny. I am a very vicious person, when I fight, I fight. But he is mature and he hardly gets angry, when he is angry, my madness has to give way. I don’t get angry when he is angry because it is not going to be pretty.”
Your children?
“They are all very independent minded. In my family we are all very strong minded people, we don’t treat them like they are kids, we talk to them like adults. The boys naturally want to be pilots. My second daughter is actually a fashionista. My first daughter is into church and prayers; she wants to be a journalist actually.”
You still has the same youthful appearance like when you are still 18yrs, what is your secret?
“I don’t stress myself. I don’t wear makeup when I am not working. Nothing stresses me! I don’t get embarrassed, I have no shame. If I fall down here I will get up and tell everybody, ‘I don fall o! How we go come do am now?” She jokes.
What’s your favourite meal?
“I just found out that fried plantain is not good. I skip meals, not because I am dieting but because I work all the time. Naturally, when you are doing this sort of job, you start to become very conscious. When they yab you and say ‘see your turkey hand,’ It will start to get to you. Then you will be forced to do some research to find out what your problems are and if you find out that dodo is part of your problems, you start working on it.”

Amarachi, who was unveiled at the weekend at the grand finale of the reality show in Lagos, shrugged off a fierce challenge from top contender, Violinist Godwin Ogechukwu and eight other finalists to go home with the winner-takes-it-all prize.
The eight years-old primary five pupil from Igbodo in Delta State is now the youngest non-inheritor millionaire in Nigeria having broken the previous record set by Solomon Ebuka Nwanke Ubani who became a millionaire at age 20.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Airtel Nigeria, Rajan Swaroop ably assisted by the CEO of Rapid Blue Format and Optima Media Group, Mr. Rotimi Pedro presented the winning cheque of N10million to Amarachi, with her mother in tow.

Sweet remedy: Chocolate can help you beat persistent coughs

  • Chemical found in cocoa has been shown to help
  • Researchers recommend a bar of dark chocolate a day
By Roger Dobson

Chocolate may be a remedy for the common cough, according to new research, writes Roger Dobson.
A compound in cocoa has been shown to reduce symptoms of both acute and chronic coughs.
About 300 people with a persistent cough are taking part in a clinical trial at 13 NHS hospitals where they are being given the naturally occurring chemical theobromine, derived from the raw ingredient of chocolate, twice a day for 14 days.

Early indicators are that 60 per cent of patients experience some measure of relief.
Researchers say a daily bar of dark chocolate may contain enough of the active compound to have an effect on a chronic cough.

However, it is not a cure  – symptoms did return once treatment was ended.
An earlier study at the National Heart and Lung Institute showed that theobromine appears to block the action of the sensory nerves, which in turn halts the cough reflex. It was found to be more effective than widely used codeine.

Everyone suffers a cough from time to time, but one in 12 Britons has a cough that interferes with activities of daily living on at least  a weekly basis.
The amount of the theobromine used in the trial was a single dose of 1,000mg. Unsweetened dark chocolate has about 450mg per ounce, sweet dark chocolate around 150mg and milk chocolate about 60mg.
Principal investigator Professor Alyn Morice, head of the Hull Cough Clinic, says: ‘This new capsule we are using seems very effective.
‘Eating a bar of dark chocolate a day which has high levels of the compound may also be effective for people with diagnosed persistent cough, although eating chocolate  on a daily basis may have other unwanted effects, including weight gain and so on.’
